Amazon-owned interactive live streaming service, Twitch, has confirmed that reports circulating about the data breach are true. The confirmation is via a Tweet without revealing any additional details. As per reports, the leak includes Twitch’s entire source code, comment history, and other sensitive information such as creator pay-outs, SDKs, clients, etc. The tweet says that “they are working with urgency to understand the extent” of the hack.
Thus far, passwords or addresses of Twitch users stay out of this breach coverage, but it’s sensible to change your passwords and allow 2-factor authentication if you haven’t done it so far.
This highly targeted attack was done by an anonymous hacker. He claims to have leaked Twitch data and the news was first reported by video game news platform Video Games Chronicle. The hacker has reportedly released a 125GB torrent link on Wednesday. The intention behind this hacking is stated to “foster more disruption and competition in the online video streaming space” because “their community is a disgusting toxic cesspool”. The leaker has also disclosed it as the first part of such a breach without disclosing their future plans.
Twitch is a live-streaming e-sports website owned by Amazon. It enjoys 30 million-plus daily visitors and is operated by Twitch Interactive, a subsidiary of Amazon.com, Inc. Twitch was recently in the news as it was shunned by users for not taking sufficient measures to block harassment.
