WhatsApp, one of the most popular and widely used instant messaging platforms, is reportedly rolling out a new end-to-end encrypted chat backup feature. In the initial phase, the feature will be for specific beta iOS and Android testers.

According to a report by WABetaInfo, these new developments which are expected to be launched soon is reported to increase the level of security that is currently available on message backups. Recently, Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg had announced on social media that WhatsApp will be adding an additional layer of privacy and security which will be rolled out soon. It will be an end-to-end encryption option for the backups people choose to store in iCloud or Google Drive. “WhatsApp is the first global messaging service at this scale to offer end-to-end encrypted messaging and backups, and getting there was a really hard technical challenge that required an entirely new framework for key storage and cloud storage across operating systems”, he added.

Along with the existing option to encrypted backups on the cloud (iCloud and Google Drive) that is available to Android and iOS and users, the new feature will be available on WhatsApp beta for Android 2.21.15.5 version and WhatsApp beta for iOS 2.21.200.14. However, to use the feature, a user will have to create a password that is necessary to restore and access the backup in the future. Moreover, the new feature will protect chat backups from third parties as well. The company has not yet made a statement on when the new feature will be launched.
