With the launch of an on-platform feature called ‘Predictions’, Reddit has introduced a new way to post to its communities. The latest feature is a spin-off of the popular Reddit Polls and allows users to guess the answers to timely questions like ‘which character will meet their fate in the next episode?’ or ‘who will win the game tomorrow?’.
According to Reddit, the latest format is designed to increase engagement on the platform by decreasing the barrier to posting. This simply means that, for users who do not feel comfortable posting publicly or engaging in discussions, the new design offers the provision to respond to a poll or make a prediction.
This is the first new posting format that Reddit has introduced in nearly two years, and is expected to increase user engagement. To use the new feature in a Reddit community, or subreddit, a moderator first needs to create a Predictions Tournament. It is a series of questions where Reddit users predict the answers. The tournament can have as many questions as the moderator wants, and they can continue to add new questions even after the tournament has started.
To attract more users, Reddit offers 1000 tokens to each user when they join the Predictions Tournament. Users can place anywhere between 10 and 100 tokens on each question, but no more or less. There is no monetization model in place for these tokens, nor any plan by Reddit to roll that out in the future. These are free and users will not be able to get more tokens during the tournament once those 1000 are all used up. This means that they will have to place their bets wisely across all the predictions or they would lose their ability to respond to further questions if they run out of tokens.
Reddit has already been testing the feature ahead of the official launch and has seen more than 1 million participants involve in the Prediction Tournaments. Some popular tournaments included the 2020 Euro cup Prediction Tournament, the Azerbaijan Grand Prix Prediction Tournament and the Oscar Prediction Tournament.
