Microsoft is introducing a simple label to its Xbox app for Windows that lets PC gamers know if a game will run on their machine before they download it. Before being rolled out to all Xbox app users, the feature is currently under testing and limited to specific games.
While system requirements have always been given in the Xbox app, this simple label should make it easier for PC owners to determine whether or not a game is compatible with their setup. To create this designation, Microsoft is testing a range of PC games for performance.
There are a few games that don’t have the label yet and instead display “performance check not available yet,” implying that the Xbox app does more than just check your PC system requirements. Microsoft looks to be compiling its own database of PC game performance.
Since Microsoft hasn’t released any details about this new performance check, it’s unclear whether the label is based on a game’s minimum requirements, recommended requirements, or other system information. It could be a simple alternative to using third-party tools and websites if the ratings are reliable. If you want to try out the new label or the ability to install PC games more easily, Microsoft is letting anyone test the new Xbox app. Simply download the Xbox Insider app and sign up for the Windows gaming preview.
