In its first copyright transparency report, YouTube sheds additional information on the tidal flow of copyright claims it gets. More than 2.2 million (about 60%) of contested claims were settled in favor of the uploader, compared to just under 1.5 million in favor of the claimant, according to the report.

Between January and June, Content ID, which automatically analyses YouTube for potential copyright concerns, accounted for over 99 percent (722.7 million) of all copyright claims. Only 0.5 percent of these were called into question.

Webforms and the Copyright Match tool were used to submit further copyright claims. Manually filed claims, according to YouTube, are twice as likely to be challenged as automated claims. This suggests that, although most conflicts are settled in their favor, creators are more hesitant to challenge Content ID claims.

Copyright holders can request that a video that is judged to be infringing on their rights be removed, as well as track audience statistics and/or receive revenue generated by the video. YouTube began offering producers a way to check for potential copyright breaches when they submit a video earlier this year. The platform allows creators to eliminate issue-causing parts of a video.

As a report points out, YouTubers have frequently chastised the platform’s handling of copyright allegations. They risk losing money or having their channel banned as a result of statements, many of which are clearly false. While the report sheds additional light on the scale of the problem, YouTube concedes that “no system is perfect” and that it is “impossible for matching technology to take into account complex legal considerations like fair use or fair dealing.”
