Vuzix, an augmented reality company, hasn’t been heard from in a while. It released its first pair of consumer-ready smart glasses in early 2019. It has now partnered with Verizon after being relatively silent for the last two years. They didn’t reveal anything about their partnership. They did, however, state that they want to commercialize AR technology for usage in sports and gaming scenarios, particularly those requiring training. Vuzix’s new Shield smart glasses will be combined with the capabilities of Verizon’s 5G network as part of the collaboration.

It’s difficult to predict whether or not this collaboration will have an impact, but it’s not surprising to see Verizon becoming more involved in AR technology. Wearable augmented, virtual, and mixed reality devices have been regularly positioned as one of the key beneficiaries of 5G network speed and latency improvements. Similarly, the emphasis on games and sports is unsurprising. NFL stadiums were among the first places where Verizon provided 5G service. They’re one of the few areas where the carrier’s mmWave installations excel since there’s enough density to support rolling out all the tiny cells needed to blanket even a small region with rapid 5G service.
