Facebook rebranded as Meta to fully embrace virtual reality through the Oculus platform, so how is it going? According to a credible source, the company told staff that Horizon Worlds, its core social VR platform for the Oculus Quest device, had increased tenfold since December.

Horizon Worlds has 300,000 monthly users, according to Meta’s chief product officer Chris Cox, since it was widely released in early December in the United States and Canada. A business spokesman confirmed that Horizon Worlds and Horizon Venues, a distinct live event VR software with the same concepts, are included. However, it does not contain the virtual reality conferencing tool Horizon Workrooms.

Horizon Worlds debuted in 2019 as an Oculus social network named Facebook Horizon, and it eventually went into beta. Users are shown as avatars with only their upper bodies and can create their personalized worlds. Meta stated earlier this week that 10,000 of those worlds have been developed so far, and its Facebook group for creators has over 20,000 members.

The company appears to be committed to avoiding issues such as the widespread abuse on Facebook, having incorporated “personal boundaries” to Horizon Worlds and Venues earlier this month. It’s also dealing with technical challenges, as some users were unable to access Horizon Venues while watching a virtual Foo Fighters concert.

Nonetheless, growth appears to be robust thus far, given that access to the site presently needs an Oculus Quest headset, with the newest Quest 2 model costing $299. CEO Mark Zuckerberg, on the other hand, stated that Meta intended to launch a version of Horizon Worlds on mobile phones later in 2022 to grow the user base. Depending on how well it goes, it might provide membership a significant boost.
