After testing the technology last year, Google Meet has begun widely deploying live translated captions. It is available on the web and mobile, but it is currently very restricted, translating just English meetings into four languages: French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish.
“Translated captions help make Google Meet video calls more inclusive and collaborative by removing language proficiency barriers,” Google stated on its Workspace blog. “When meeting participants consume content in their preferred language, this helps equalize information sharing, learning, and collaboration and ensures your meetings are as effective as possible for everyone.”
The feature is intended to be useful for all-hands meetings or training sessions with teams from all around the world. According to Google, it can also be useful in educational settings, “allowing educators to connect and interact with students, parents and community stakeholders with diverse backgrounds.”
To activate the feature, users must first enable captions in settings and set the language to English before enabling translated captions beneath. After that, they can select one of the translated language alternatives. Check out Google Meet’s translated captions help page for complete info.
Last year, Google revealed the tool at its I/O developer conference. Customers of Google Workspace Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, the Teaching and Learning Upgrade, and Google Workspace for Education Plus may get live translated captions. It is being rolled out gradually, so it might take some time until you see it.
