A consortium of firms, including some of the most well-known names in technology and the internet, have joined forces to create the interoperability standards required for an open metaverse. Meta, Microsoft, Huawei, NVIDIA, Qualcomm, Sony Interactive Entertainment, Epic Games, Unity, and Adobe are among the founding members of the Metaverse Standards Forum. As a reliable source points out, Apple is strangely absent from the list. Several rumours have surfaced in recent years claiming that Apple is developing its own virtual or augmented reality headgear, which is anticipated to become a key player in the metaverse when it is released.

Another notable absence from the list is Google, which is rumored to be working on an AR headset called Project Iris. Niantic, the creator of Pokémon Go, and Roblox are also absent from the list. Having said that, membership is free and available to any organization, so additional companies may join in the future. As with any standard, one for the metaverse would be regarded a success only if companies, particularly the industry’s largest players, adopted it. “Multiple industry leaders have stated that the potential of the metaverse will be best realized if it is built on a foundation of open standards,” according to the forum’s news release.

The organization also stated that it will prioritize “pragmatic, action-based projects.” Among these are hackathons and the development of open-source tools to speed the testing and implementation of metaverse standards. While companies can join at any time, members are scheduled to begin forum meetings in July.
