TikTok has benefited users in discovering both current and former musical artists, and it may soon launch its own music streaming service. According to a reliable source, parent company ByteDance has submitted a trademark application with the US Patent and Trademark Office for “TikTok Music,” Users would be able to “purchase, play, share, download music, songs, albums, lyrics… live stream audio and video… edit and upload photographs as the cover of playlists.. [and] comment on music, songs and albums.”

Resso, a music streaming app developed by ByteDance, is already accessible in India, Brazil, and Indonesia. Some of the functions indicated in the trademark filing, such as playlists, music sharing, and community engagement, are available in that app. Furthermore, the source points out, TikTok leads Brazilian listeners to the complete song on Resso.

The trademark application was filed in Australia first, and then in the United States on May 9th. It’s unclear whether it wants to build such a service on Resso, but according to the source, it must establish that it will really use the trademark before registering for it in the US — so it’s not simply a placeholder. Other prospective use cases, according to the company, include “live stream audio and video interactive media programming in the field of entertainment, fashion, sports, and current events,”
