With Apple Vision Pro taking the internet by storm and showing off its versatile capabilities across several industries, it’s clear that Meta has its work cut out for it. This might be why the company is pushing its new Quest headsets to students and educators.

Facebook and Instagram’s parent company, Meta, is getting ready to bring its virtual reality headset into classrooms so that students as young as 13 may experience an immersive learning environment.

By doing this, Meta hopes to put a spin on conventional education by giving students the freedom to learn about the world no matter where they are or what time they are living in. “You will be able to teach biology and chemistry without having to have a fully equipped laboratory in the future … you will be able to walk the streets of Ancient Rome with students,” Meta’s President of Global Affairs Nick Clegg, who has overseen the Quest for education initiative, told CNN.

The technology, which is still unnamed, would provide educators access to educational apps on the company’s Quest devices and enable them to program and manage several student headsets simultaneously.

The product would probably take the form of a subscription service akin to Meta’s Quest for Business, which was introduced last year and lets companies oversee a fleet of headsets for use in the workplace. Although the company did not disclose the subscription’s cost, it did state that the product would be available for use by fall.

Virtual reality headsets could become as common in classrooms as other classroom tech devices like iPads, Google Chromebooks, and smart whiteboards if they are implemented in educational settings.

Nevertheless, little research has been done on the advantages of immersive virtual reality in the classroom, partly because the field is evolving more quickly than teachers can keep up with. While some early research indicates that technology can increase student motivation, other studies find that it can overwhelm students and hinder their learning. So, it is unclear whether VR headsets can actually improve education or if it’s just another short-lived fad.
