OpenAI has unveiled its latest AI model, GPT-4o (the “o” stands for omni-model). The chatbot comes with some shiny new features and also flaunts significant improvements to its existing capabilities.
Mira Murati, the chief technical officer at OpenAI, revealed the flagship model at the company’s Spring Update event. The company claims that GPT-4o offers GPT-4-level intelligence at a significantly quicker pace. It has also acquired enhanced text, voice, and vision capabilities.
GPT-4o can produce real-time responses even in speech mode and offers notable improvements in response latency. It is now possible to pause GPT-4o-powered ChatGPT in order to respond to another inquiry – something that was previously not possible. However, the most significant improvement in the newly revealed model is the addition of sentimental voices.
ChatGPT now responds with a variety of voice modulations, sounding less robotic and more human. The AI can also detect emotions and even react using different tones like dramatic or robotic.
During a live demonstration, the voice version of GPT-4o offered practical advice on how to solve a simple mathematical equation written on paper, even making corrections in real-time. It also translated between Italian and English, examined some computer code, and deciphered the emotions in a man’s smiling selfie.
However, the demo session was far from perfect – the chatbot initially mistook the smiling man for a wooden surface and began solving an equation that hadn’t been displayed yet. This inadvertently revealed that more work needs to be done before all the bugs can be ironed out.While the subscription price of GPT-4o has not been revealed, OpenAI has announced that the GPT-4 AI model, along with all its features, is now free to use. Users of the platform’s free tier will have access to features like GPTs – mini chatbots created for particular use cases, GPT Store, the Memory feature, which allows the AI to remember the user and particular information about them for subsequent conversations, and its sophisticated data analytics.
