AI is on a mission to permeate every inch of our digital lives. What better way to do it than via social media? With the introduction of Meta’s AI Studio, users of Instagram who are based in the US can now build “AI characters” that reflect their hobbies and personalities. This move highlights Meta’s dedication to improving digital interactions and opening up access to more personalized AI.

“Built with Llama 3.1, AI Studio lets anyone create and discover AI characters and allows creators to build an AI as an extension of themselves to reach more fans,” Meta states.

Users can access AI Studio by tapping the new “Create an AI chat” option in Instagram’s message function. From there, users can choose between two types of AI characters: “creator AI,” who are meant to be like extensions of celebrities, business owners, and content creators, and standard AI characters, which are mostly created for fun.

The new creator AIs, according to Meta, are designed to solve a persistent problem for Instagram users with big followings. The popular creators on Instagram struggle to keep up with the daily barrage of messages they get. But now users will be able to create an AI that is “an extension of themselves,” according to Meta’s VP of Product for AI Studio, Connor Hayes.

“These creators can actually use the comments that they’ve made, the captions that they’ve made, the transcripts of the Reels that they’ve posted, as well as any custom instructions or links that they want to provide … so that the AI can answer on their behalf,” Hayes told Engadget.

On the standard character front, users can design customized AI characters that can make memes, converse on particular subjects, and even offer advice.  These appear to be focused on either educating or entertainment, based on Meta’s examples. These chatbots, like the creator-focused characters, will run on Meta’s recently introduced Llama 3.1 model.

Meta also states in its blog post that it has  “policies and protections in place to keep people safe and help ensure AIs are used responsibly.”
