Google Meet’s latest AI-driven feature, “take notes for me,” is now available to Google Workspace users with the Gemini Enterprise, Gemini Education Premium, or AI Meetings & Messaging add-ons. Unlike Meet’s transcription tool, which records every spoken word, this new feature provides concise summaries of the discussion. Google initially introduced this capability at its 2023 Cloud Next conference.

Currently, the feature only supports spoken English, but it promises to ease the stress of missing significant meetings. It automatically creates notes in a Google Doc and attaches the file to the calendar event once the meeting ends, allowing you to review the details later. Additionally, the Google Doc is sent to the meeting organizer and any participants who have enabled the feature. To enable the note-taking feature, users should click the pencil icon located in the top right corner of the Google Meet interface.

According to Google, this new feature will also provide a summary of missed content, allowing you to quickly catch up when you join the meeting later—eliminating the need for repetition. When using Google Meet’s recording and transcription tools simultaneously, the links to those files will be included in the same Google Doc containing your meeting notes.

This feature could also be a valuable accessibility tool for individuals who struggle with processing spoken language and taking notes simultaneously. It may help them stay more focused and fully engaged during meetings without the need to repeatedly ask for information to be repeated. Google aims to roll out the new feature to all Google Workspace customers by September 10th, 2024.

However, there are concerns regarding the accuracy of the AI-generated notes. Users have already noted that Google Meet’s transcription tool frequently requires manual corrections. While the potential is exciting, it’s worth noting that, like any AI tool, the accuracy of Google Meet’s latest innovation may vary. AI is continually improving, but occasional hiccups are part of the journey.
