OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT has unveiled o1-preview, its latest large language model. o1 is the first in a line of “reasoning” models that have been trained to provide faster answers to more complex queries. It’s being introduced alongside the smaller, less expensive o1-mini version as part of the company’s Project Strawberry.

These models are made to handle challenging assignments with improved problem-solving skills, specifically in the fields of science, coding, and mathematics.  The models are trained to carry out reasoning at a slower pace, like humans do. This is to simulate thinking through problems before responding. Compared to their predecessors, they are able to solve more complex tasks with this strategy.

According to OpenAI, The o1 series performs at a level equivalent to PhD students. The models are specifically designed to solve harder and more complex assignments in math, science, and coding.

“We trained these models to spend more time thinking through problems before they respond, much like a person would. Through training, they learn to refine their thinking process, try different strategies, and recognize their mistakes,” OpeanAI states in their recent blog post on o1.

However, it should be noted that o1 falls short of GPT-4o in several respects. For instance, it performs poorly in terms of factual information about the world.  It cannot process files or images, nor can it browse the internet. However, the company feels that it represents an entirely new class of capabilities.

In terms of availability, ChatGPT Plus and Team users will have access to the o1 series. Users are limited to a weekly rate limit of 30 messages for o1-preview and 50 for o1-mini, and they can manually choose between the o1-preview and o1-mini models using the model picker. The company is also planning to increase these limits and enable ChatGPT to select the best model on its own in response to user prompts.
