YouTube is rolling out a conversational AI feature to users. The new conversational AI tool, which was previously in the testing stage, is now available to all US YouTube Premium customers. The feature’s launch was announced by TeamYouTube’s official account on X (previously known as Twitter).
Users can soon spot a new Ask button beneath the videos, in the same row as the Like, Share, and Download buttons. The button will also feature a sparkle icon beside it, which indicates that it is an AI-powered feature. Pressing this button will cause a window to open in place of the comment box, allowing users to type in questions regarding the video.
For instance, users can ask questions about objects they notice in the images, see recommendations for similar content, and much more. Right now, the tool only supports English-language videos. However, there are reports that the tool will support all languages in the future.
The company clarified that the “LLMs draw on info from YouTube and the web” but did not disclose the name of the large language model (LLM) utilized for this feature. This implies that the conversational AI tool needs more than subtitle data and video processing in order to respond to user inquiries.
The company stated that the large language model (LLM) utilized for this feature is anonymous, but it does take information from the web and YouTube. This indicates that the conversational AI tool’s ability to respond to user inquiries is not limited to using video processing and subtitle data.
YouTube will gather information each time a user uses the tool and sends in a query. The company claims that the data is utilized to create and enhance products and services. A user’s conversations will automatically be removed from the servers after forty-five days.
It should be noted that the feature is only being made available to premium users of the Android app who are located in the United States. As of right now, there has been no announcement on when the feature will launch globally.
