Google’s Gemini Live AI assistant is being rolled out to all Android users for free. The standout feature is that you can interact with the chatbot by talking to it. It was first introduced at the Pixel 9 Series launch event and until recently, was only available to Gemini Advanced subscribers. But now, the company has announced a wider rollout for free users.

Anyone with an Android device can download the Gemini for Android app and start using the feature right away. This chatbot is a lot more advanced than the standard Gemini and Google Assistant – it can retain context,  detect more natural speech patterns (such as pauses and filler words), and even offer a less robotic voice.

Upon launching the app, users will now see a waveform symbol with the sparkle icon next to the microphone and camera icons in the bottom-right corner. The feature comes with 10 voice modes and can only communicate in English at present.

Because each voice is made to suit different scenarios, your conversations with the chatbot can become more dynamic and personalized. The Gemini app’s “Gemini’s Voice” settings allow users to change and choose the voices. These voices mimic different tones, which makes conversations more realistic.

You can pause or end a conversation with Gemini by navigating to the bottom of the interface. You can also use other apps while maintaining a conversation with the chatbot.

While Gemini Live does not support Gemini Extensions to access Gmail, YouTube Music, and other services from the real-time chat, those features will be added soon as part of Project Astra, along with camera capabilities. Google also plans to integrate Gemini Live into the iOS app in the future.

Although the Gemini Live AI assistant can speak clearly, it struggles to compete with the ChatGPT Advanced Voice Mode function, which features an expressive voice and can respond to the user’s words.
