Google is coming out with a brand new way to search. The company has given its Lens feature an AI makeover to introduce search capabilities into it.

With the most recent version of Google Lens, users of Android and iOS devices who speak English and have the Google app installed, can ask questions to Google’s AI by pointing their camera at an object and voicing a question out loud instead of typing out a search query.

You need to sign up for Google’s Search Labs program and opt to take part in the “AI Overviews and more” experimental features in Labs in order to use Lens’s new video analysis capability. The Google app’s video-capturing mode for Lens is activated by holding down the shutter button on your smartphone.

TechCrunch reports that according to Lou Wang, head of product management at Lens, this new feature makes sense of the video and relevant user questions using a “customized” Gemini model. Gemini is Google’s suite of AI models that powers several products in the company’s portfolio.

When you shoot a video and ask a question, Lens will link you to an answer provided by AI Overviews, a Google Search tool that utilizes AI to compile information from all over the internet.

“Say you’re at the aquarium and want to learn more about some interesting fish at one of the exhibits. Open Lens in the Google app and hold down the shutter button to record while asking your question out loud, like, “why are they swimming together?” Our systems will make sense of the video and your question together to produce an AI Overview, along with helpful resources from across the web,” reads Google’s latest blog post.

In addition to this video search feature, Lens can now simultaneously search using text and images. Users who speak English, even those who are not registered in Labs, can open the Google app, press and hold the camera button to take a picture, and then speak out loud to ask a question.
