AI has been something of a double-edged sword for creatives lately. While AI models have made it a breeze to automate mundane and repetitive tasks, it doesn’t change the fact that these systems are trained using the works of human artists without their consent.

Adobe has now come out with a free web app that is meant to protect artists and their works. Adobe announced the launch of its new platform, Adobe Content Authenticity, in a newsroom post. The app allows users to add content credentials and AI labels. Content Credentials are details added to a file’s metadata that highlight information about the person who created it. The app can also add credits to a group of files.

Creators can choose to disclose information like their name, website, and social media profiles. Adobe claims that the Content Credentials will protect creators against exploitation and unauthorized usage of their work. Additionally, users will be able to indicate whether or not they want their content to be used for training AI models.

It’s interesting to note that although the web app works with all Adobe Creative Cloud tools, content that wasn’t made on the platform can still be attributed. This also applies to audio, video, and image files.

With this platform, Adobe can “truly say that wherever an image, or a video, or an audio file goes, on anywhere on the web or on a mobile device, the content credential will always be attached to it,” according to Andy Parsons, senior director of Content Authenticity at Adobe, who spoke with TechCrunch.

That will only be effective, though, if other companies choose to honor content credentials. As of right now, only Spawning – the opt-out aggregator of generative AI – has agreed to acknowledge this attribution.

The feature is currently accessible as a Chrome Extension and will be made available for public beta by the first quarter of 2025.
