A new tool that could make it simpler to keep track of messages received on WhatsApp is now available to beta testers.
WhatsApp has begun rolling out a new feature for beta testers that could help users stay on top of their messages. The updated reminders feature, which previously notified users about missed status updates, now includes the option to receive reminders for unread messages. This feature is available on the beta version v2.24.25.29 of the app for Android. It was first spotted by the update tracker WABetaInfo.
To manage the reminder notification feature, you can go to settings, then notifications, and tap on “reminders” to enable or disable it.
WhatsApp’s internal algorithm determines which contacts will trigger reminder notifications, prioritizing those the user has interacted with the most. This algorithm recalculates interactions every time WhatsApp is reinstalled, as the data is not stored in backups or on the server.
Notably, the reminder feature is designed to function sparingly, ensuring that users are not overwhelmed with excessive notifications. This approach helps keep notifications relevant and less disruptive.
Additionally, WhatsApp has also introduced an online counter feature for group chats, allowing users to see how many members are currently active in a group. This feature aims to encourage real-time interactions and enhance engagement during group discussions. According to WABetaInfo, the feature is being rolled out to select testers using WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.24.25.30.
The online counter shows how many users have WhatsApp open on their devices but doesn’t indicate how many are actively engaged with the group. Additionally, it doesn’t reveal the names of online users or include those who have turned off their online status, providing only a limited view of activity.
