OpenAI has made its digital editing platform, Canvas, available for all ChatGPT users. Once exclusive to ChatGPT Plus, Teams, Edu, and Enterprise subscribers, Canvas is now open to everyone with access to GPT-4. The exciting announcement was made during the “12 Days of OpenAI” livestream event.

Canvas transforms the traditional ChatGPT interface into a more user-friendly design. It features a conversation panel on the left and a project workspace on the right, allowing users to seamlessly interact with their content. Now, users can request edits directly from ChatGPT, with changes instantly applied to the content area without the need to generate a whole new response. This streamlined setup enhances workflow and makes content editing smoother than ever.

OpenAI has seamlessly integrated Canvas into GPT-4, making it a built-in feature of the model. Users no longer need to toggle between models using the model picker. The enhanced Canvas automatically activates for specific prompts or pasted text, offering even greater convenience and a smoother user experience.

The latest version of Canvas brings powerful features, including the ability to run Python code, handle larger text pastes, and be launched within custom GPTs. Users can now paste Python code directly into ChatGPT, triggering Canvas automatically. Furthermore, OpenAI demonstrated how Canvas can create and preview visuals from code, enabling analysts and developers to work on formulas or data before finalizing charts. This makes Canvas a powerful tool for streamlining workflows and enhancing productivity.

Canvas will be a default feature for users creating custom GPTs, though they can choose when and whether Canvas activates for specific prompts in their custom assistant. To prevent interfering with their current functionality, OpenAI has not made Canvas a default feature for custom GPTs that are already in place. Through the settings, users can effortlessly incorporate Canvas into their custom GPTs.

This editing approach is designed to help users achieve their desired outcomes and address even the smallest issues, all without having to leave the ChatGPT interface.
