OpenAI has unveiled GPT-4.5, the latest iteration of its generative AI model powering ChatGPT, marking a significant advancement in natural language processing. This release is currently available as a research preview to ChatGPT Pro subscribers, who pay $200 per month for access.
Described by OpenAI as its “largest and best model for chat yet,” GPT-4.5 represents a substantial leap in scaling up pre-training and post-training processes. The model enhances the AI’s ability to recognize patterns, draw connections, and generate creative insights without explicit reasoning. Early testing indicates that interactions with GPT-4.5 feel more natural, thanks to its broader knowledge base, improved ability to follow user intent, and greater emotional intelligence. These enhancements make it particularly useful for tasks such as improving writing, programming, and solving practical problems.
One of the notable improvements in GPT-4.5 is its reduced tendency to produce “hallucinations,” a term used to describe AI-generated content that is plausible-sounding but incorrect or nonsensical. OpenAI reports that GPT-4.5 has a hallucination rate of 37.1%, down from 61.8% in the previous version. This reduction enhances the reliability and accuracy of the AI’s responses.
However, the advancements in GPT-4.5 come with increased computational demands. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged that GPT-4.5 is a “giant, expensive model,” reflecting the significant resources required for its training and operation. This has led to a phased rollout, with ChatGPT Pro users gaining initial access, followed by plans to extend availability to other subscription tiers in the near future.
Despite its size and cost, GPT-4.5 is not classified as a reasoning model. Altman has indicated that GPT-4.5 will be OpenAI’s last model without chain-of-thought reasoning capabilities, signaling a shift towards more advanced AI systems capable of complex problem-solving in future iterations.
The release of GPT-4.5 positions OpenAI competitively in the rapidly evolving AI landscape, where rivals like DeepSeek and Anthropic have also introduced new models. OpenAI continues to focus on scaling and pretraining to stay at the technological forefront, with GPT-4.5 representing a step towards sophisticated AI capable of replicating human-like interactions and output.
As OpenAI gathers user feedback during this research preview phase, the company aims to refine GPT-4.5’s capabilities further, paving the way for more intuitive and reliable AI interactions.
