Meta has officially rolled out an AI-powered video editing feature across its Meta AI app, the Meta.AI website, and the standalone Edits app, available in the U.S. and more than a dozen additional countries . This initial launch arrives amid growing competition in generative AI tools from rivals like Google and Adobe .

The feature allows users to apply preset AI prompts – over fifty options currently – to stylize all or part of the first ten seconds of their video clips, without requiring any editing expertise. Examples include turning a scene into a classic comic book aesthetic, adding cinematic lighting with sparkles, or swapping clothing for thematic outfits like space suits or tuxedos.

It should be noted that the video editing does not support text prompts in this rollout. However, Meta has confirmed that later this year, users can “edit videos alongside Meta AI with your own text prompts to make your video edits exactly as you imagine them.”

Edited videos can be shared directly to Facebook, Instagram, or the Meta AI Discover feed, making content creation and distribution seamless. Importantly, this service is free for a limited time, positioning Meta to drive mass adoption while gathering usage data.

Under the hood, the tool leverages Meta’s research from models like Movie Gen and Make‑A‑Scene, creatively condensed into a template system rather than full custom prompt generation at launch .

Initial feedback suggests that while results are imaginative, some outputs feel surreal or unfinished, highlighting the early stage of this generative tech . Still, Meta emphasizes that this move democratizes creative video editing, aiming to empower both casual users and creators with accessible, fun tools.

As generative video continues to evolve, Meta’s integration of preset‑based editing marks a strategic first step. The industry now watches closely for the promised custom prompt feature later this year, and whether it will live up to expectations.
