Google is slowly rolling out its new Material You design changes to Gmail, Docs, Calendar, and more on Android. The company confirmed that the new design update is rolling out with version 2021.08.24 and newer on Android 12+. The updated look will include changes to action buttons, navigation bars, and Google’s Sans text for enhanced readability. It comes under the bigger Android 12 redesign initiated by Google that includes shifting colors, big bubbly buttons, and smoother animations. The Meet app will also be redesigned, but the changes are limited to Dynamic Color (on Pixel phones) and curved buttons.

Through the design changes, Google aims for a more dynamic personalized look for the users. It would mean that Pixel devices with Android 12 or newer versions will now be able to match the colors inside applications like Google Meet, Gmail, Google Drive with their wallpapers. Although, existing color-coded file types and color schemes will remain unchanged within these applications.

Ultimately, the final result is subtle yet colorful. Google has adopted new approaches with rounded corners and thankfully, the changes are mostly aesthetic. So, the core navigation and the button placements will not change, but the overall look will improve. To expand upon the existing accessibility support, Material You will automatically adjust the size, contrast, and line width that is based on user preferences and the app context.

These design changes are already available in Google Drive, Gmail, Google Sheets, Docs, and Slides with the version 1.21.342. The updates are currently limited to theming toolbars and other UI chrome. The document background remains unchanged.

These changes will start appearing in Google Meet on September 19th and in Google Calendar on September 20th. All these design changes are available to both Google Workspace customers and personal Google accounts.

The update doesn’t mention Google Tasks, Chat, or Keep at present. These upcoming changes join Google Calculator, Camera, Contacts, Clock, and Files.
