Abbott is developing “biowearable” devices that can track certain elements of one’s body, to provide people with additional information about their overall health and assist them in taking action. The Lingo devices will monitor glucose, ketones, and lactate levels, and they may potentially be able to check alcohol levels.

At CES, Abbott CEO Robert B. Ford said, “This will be like having a window into your body. It’s science that you will be able to access any time so you can understand what your body is telling you and what it needs.”

You may be familiar with the name Abbott. It’s the company behind the popular BinaxNOW fast COVID-19 testing. It’s also the brains behind the Freestyle Libre, one of the most popular continuous glucose monitors that eliminate the need for finger stick blood testing.

The upcoming biowearables, which are not intended for medical use, are based on the sensing technology developed by Abbott for the Freestyle Libre. A variant of the device is used by athletes to assist them to optimize their food intake for training and performance. The business intends to develop glucose monitoring use cases using Lingo to assist the general population in managing things like sleep, weight, and energy levels.

The ketone biowearable’s goal is to provide continuous ketones tracking so that users may observe how rapidly they enter ketosis. This is a condition in which the body does not have enough carbs to convert into energy and instead burns fat (and generates ketones). Abbott’s objective with the lactate wearable is to continually assess lactate buildup while exercising. It claims to be able to give insights into athletic performance.

Abbott will have to wait a while before releasing this technology to the public. If and when the biowearables come and perform as promised, they should assist anyone who wants to keep a careful eye on their body’s state.
