Airbnb understands that you may be hesitant to book a stay while the COVID-19 outbreak makes travel difficult, so it is preparing to provide some protection of its own. The rental company has announced that it would begin offering customized travel insurance to its visitors this spring. While the specifics are not yet disclosed, Airbnb will offer coverage in collaboration with a “reputable” insurer.

In addition, the business has developed a Guest COVID Support Program, which partially pays travelers if border closures, quarantine periods, or other government rules render current bookings unfeasible. If a host refuses to issue a complete refund, Airbnb will send a travel coupon worth half of what hasn’t been reimbursed thus far. The program applies to all stays with a check-in date of December 1st, 2021, or after, so if your Christmas plans have fallen through, you should contact Airbnb.

The plan isn’t shrouded in mystery. Airbnb’s company has been severely impacted by the pandemic as a whole, and COVID-19’s Omicron variation is further adding to the concern for hosts and guests who were hopeful the worst was over. Coupons and first-party insurance may entice some would-be explorers to arrange accommodations when they would otherwise stay at home.
