Amazon unveiled Astro, its long-rumored home robot at its annual fall event. It marks the ecommerce giant’s first foray into mobile robots for the home.
Marketed as “Keep home closer with Astro, the household robot for home monitoring, with Alexa”, Astro is, in essence, a perfect mix of Alexa voice assistant, Echo Show tablet, a substantial bout of artificial intelligence, and Ring’s home security system. Amazon makes it clear on its website that “Astro cannot go up or down stairs.” It is 2-foot-tall and weighs 20-pound and comes with a 10-inch touchscreen, an assortment of sensors, cameras, microphones, and of course wheels enabling multi-directional movements.
If you need an Alexa-powered household robot for home monitoring that moves around your house autonomously, Astro is in. You can watch/monitor your home live via the Astro app when you are away. It helps you keep tabs on specific rooms and viewpoints, and alerts you on any happenings that need attention.
It is a great companion when you are home too. The home robot can play music, podcasts, shows, etc. on demand. It will do everything that Alexa does including deliver calls, book appointments, set reminders, alarms, etc. The cherry on top is it can do all these by following you from room to room. Beatboxing and the ability to rest in command are the main two features that make it different from being an Alexa on wheels.
The robot has been in the making for the past four years and now it is offering by invitation only. Its price starts at $999.
Other major products that were announced in the fall product event are its first smart thermostat, Echo Show 15, an elder care service called Alexa Together, a video calling cum gaming project called Amazon Glow, Halo Fitness & Halo Nutrition services, etc.
