Amazon’s Alexa was the name of the company’s online ranking site before it became recognized as the e-commerce giant’s voice assistant. It was founded in 1996 and quickly rose to prominence for monitoring online traffic and identifying the most popular websites worldwide. For individuals that desire thorough SEO metrics and insights, the site also provides premium memberships. Amazon has now announced that Alexa.com will be retired on May 1st, 2022, only a month after it celebrates its 26th anniversary.
The company stated in their announcement:
“Twenty-five years ago, we founded Alexa Internet. After two decades of helping you find, reach, and convert your digital audience, we’ve made the difficult decision to retire Alexa.com on May 1, 2022. Thank you for making us your go-to resource for content research, competitive analysis, keyword research, and so much more.”
While Amazon did not specify why it is discontinuing the service, according to sources, Alexa Internet traffic has been declining over the last decade, based on statistics. It’s also been a long time since anyone was concerned about their Alexa score, so Amazon may have decided it was time to say goodbye. The e-commerce giant has already stopped taking new subscriptions for Alexa’s premium tier, although current members may still access their accounts until May 1st, 2022. They will no longer have access after that date, but they will be able to export their data through the service’s different tools if they so want.
