An Apple self driving EV may be the company’s way of narrowing down the scope of its long-in-development electric vehicle. According to sources, Apple is now focusing on a completely self-driving car rather than a more traditional vehicle with semi-autonomous characteristics. Kevin Lynch, the new project head, wants the very first model to drive itself.
The company is hastening its preparations to match. Whereas Apple had previously stated that it will launch in five to seven years, the sources claim that it is now aiming for 2025, or just four years. The strategy, though, is said to be “fluid,” and hinges around Apple finishing its entire autonomous system on time. Apple is said to have completed much of the “core work” on the car’s processor.
According to rumors, Apple was planning an “ideal” interior with lounge-style seats for passengers, a touchscreen infotainment system in the center, and no steering wheel or pedals. An emergency takeover method has been discussed as well.
Apple has refused to comment. The new goal might benefit a project that has had its shares of difficulties, such as fleeing executives and wary partners. The startup might compete with or outperform traditional automakers such as Volkswagen, which plans to deliver complete or near-full autonomy around the same time. However, full self-driving faces other hurdles, including unpredictable traffic and weather issues such as snow. It wouldn’t be unusual if Apple had to postpone the automobile, or at the very least ask drivers to take control in specific circumstances.
