Apple is releasing new versions of its flagship media editing software Final Cut Pro (10.6) and Logic Pro (10.7) that take full advantage of the new and improved M1 Pro and M1 Max. It will have a major focus on video processing and machine learning. FCP editors can play up to seven streams of 8K ProRes at the same time, and export in the format over five times quicker – no small feat for a laptop, points out Apple. You can even color-grade footage that is 8K HDR using only the built-in screen on the MacBook Pro.

You may now utilize the new Object Tracker to attach animated effects to faces and objects. Cinematic Mode footage from the iPhone 13 series may also be simply edited. Motion can now render visual effects work twice as quickly and play two 8K video streams at five times the previous frame rate. Meanwhile, Compressor transcodes HEVC video twice as fast and ProRes up to 10 times faster. For the first time, Canon lovers may now convert Cinema RAW Light videos to other formats. There’s also a Watch Folders feature that can automatically encode material when it enters a certain folder, which is useful for speeding workflows, especially among teams.

Meanwhile, the Logic Pro update focuses on spatial audio production. Dolby Atmos tracks can now be created using new mixers, panners, and plugins, and the new MacBook Pros can leverage their increased horsepower to make particularly sophisticated mixes. The music editing software is now included with GarageBand’s Producer Packs, allowing you to use royalty-free beats and samples from artists such as Boys Noize, Mark Ronson, and Trakgirl.

Existing users may get both updates for free. Final Cut Pro is typically $300 for new customers, with Motion and Compressor each costing $50. The cost of Logic Pro is $200. If you’re heavily engaged in ProRes or want to publish on Apple Music, the updates make the most sense. Still, at least for FCP, it is. Even if you’re mostly dealing with 8K material, you might complete some video projects swiftly with just your MacBook Pro.
