Apple’s next product launch event will be held on September 7th, according to an invitation handed out to the media. Apple is expected to reveal details about new iPhones and Apple Watches at the event.
The invitation, with the tagline “Far out,” is for an in-person event at Apple’s Cupertino campus’s Steve Jobs Theater, which would be the company’s first major product launch event at the theater since the pandemic began. The event on September 7th will also be streamed live online.
The iPhone 14 range will most likely be the major draw. Apple is expected to release four new models: a 6.1-inch iPhone 14; a new 6.7-inch iPhone 14 (perhaps with the “Plus” or “Max” label); a 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro; and a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max. Yes, Apple is unlikely to release a new Mini phone, much to the chagrin of the hundreds of us in the iPhone Mini fan club.
The Pro line could receive the most significant upgrades. The rumored removal of the controversial notch in favor of a hole-punch selfie camera and a pill-shaped cutout for Face ID is perhaps the most significant change. Apple is also rumored to introduce an always-on display option that will be specific to the Pro phones, possibly allowing you to see iOS 16’s new lock screen widgets even when the screen is turned off. For the first time, Apple may make its next A-series CPU available only to Pro users. In terms of sensors, the Pros’ primary camera is believed to be upgraded to a 48-megapixel sensor, while all four iPhone 14 models are expected to include an autofocus-enabled front-facing camera.
The interesting “Far out” phrase might be hinting at a few other enhancements. Perhaps improvements to the telephoto camera on its iPhones? Or is it the long-rumored satellite connectivity? And a brief video posted by Apple’s SVP of marketing, Greg Joswiak, relies heavily on the stars motif, possibly hinting at the inclusion of an astrophotography capability.
Three new Apple Watches might also be unveiled at the event. The Apple Watch Series 8 is said to appear similar to the Series 7, but with the addition of a body temperature sensor. An updated Apple Watch SE with a speedier CPU but the same body as the current model is rumored to be in the works. In addition, the new high-end watch is said to be aimed at extreme sports athletes, and it may feature a larger screen and a longer battery life.
The company is also rumored to be developing on new AirPods Pro and iPads, and Apple has previously stated that a new Mac Pro is in the works, so those might be presented during this future presentation.
