The Sustainable Markets Initiative today unveiled the Astra Carta, a framework and an aspiration for the private sector to embrace the next frontier of space sustainability.
The Astra Carta expands on the Terra Carta’s basis to forge a future of ethical and sustainable space exploration, development, and collaboration. Its mission is to provide a roadmap for the global commercial sector to align its space-related operations with sustainability goals, methodologies, and standards in collaboration with governments, international organizations, and other stakeholders.
The unveiling of the Astra Carta framework brings to fruition His Majesty King Charles III’s vision for space sustainability, which he stated at the Space Sustainability Summit in 2022 as Prince of Wales. The Sustainable Markets Initiative led the development of the Astra Carta, and today at a Space Sustainability ceremony at Buckingham Palace, The King presented the Astra Carta seal, created by Sir Jony Ive and a visual symbol of the Astra Carta’s aspirations.
The Astra Carta framework, like the Sustainable Markets Initiative’s Terra Carta, intends to gather the private sector in order to create ambition and momentum in promoting and accelerating sustainable technologies and business models. It also acknowledges the unique role that space may play in constructing a sustainable Earth, as well as the necessity for space-related companies to address environmental and sustainability consequences on and beyond our planet. The goal of this project supports a focus on putting sustainability at the center of space activities.
