A brief outage of Cloudfare’s servers caused a string of websites and digital services to go down today, including big names such as FTX, Discord, DoorDash, Omegle, Feedly, and League of Legends. Thankfully, the security company was able to quickly identify and rectify the issue within an hour, getting those online services back up and running.
Cloudflare is a major content delivery network (CDN) and server provider, so if any of its systems crash or have issues, the majority of the internet becomes unavailable to the end-user. The issue impacted people across the globe and caused those websites to show an ‘Error 500’ on the screen for users.
It is not yet clear what caused the outage, with Cloudfare’s official page tweeting that “the issue has been identified and a fix is being implemented”. There are also several reports claiming that the company had faced a similar outage in some parts of the world last week. Cloudfare’s official website has mentioned a brief incident report claiming, “connectivity in Cloudflare’s network has been disrupted in broad regions”. The post says that the issue was reported at approximately 6:34 a.m. UTC, the problem was identified just over 20 minutes later around 6:57 a.m., and the fix was implemented at around 7:20 a.m.
Some popular websites that were affected by the outage include Amazon Web Services, Crunchyroll, Google Services, Fur Affinity, and Grindr — among many, many more. Some users have also claimed that they were struggling to use Coinbase, Shopify, and NordVPN as well.
Twitter has exploded with tweets related to the brief outage that took almost half of the internet down. “Gotta love seeing 95% of the crypto ecosystem down because of a Cloudfare outage. Very decentralized! Great work guys!”, wrote a Twitter user.
