By December 2024, a module including a first space-based film studio and a sports stadium might be linked to the International Space Station. The initiative is being spearheaded by Space Entertainment Enterprise (SEE), which is co-producing a Tom Cruise film that will be shot in space in part. A credible source reports that if and when SEE-1 is operational, it wants to host TV and film projects, as well as music events and some type of sports that may be shot or livestreamed.
The station will be built by Axiom Space, which won a NASA contract to create the first commercial ISS module two years ago. If everything goes well, SEE-1 will be linked to the ISS’s Axiom arm. SEE-1 will remain tethered to Axiom Station once it separates from the ISS in 2028.
It remains to be seen if SEE and Axiom can carry out their proposal. For one thing, SEE has not stated how much the facility would cost. It is now preparing to launch a fundraising campaign.
A Russian team shot a feature-length fiction picture in space for the first time last year, beating Cruise and his director, Doug Liman. The film, The Challenge, is set to be released later this year. Meanwhile, Cruise and Liman are slated to film their film aboard the International Space Station later in 2022.
