Large language models are far from perfect. In fact, a lot of generative AI companies warn consumers about possible errors or “hallucinations” present in the content generated by AI.
Google’s Gemini has set out to remedy this flaw. Users of Gemini AI can now use Google to confirm the legitimacy of the content generated by the chatbot. Users can use the Google search engine to verify the details supplied in the AI-generated content right as Gemini AI responds to a query.
Just beneath the AI-generated response, users will find that Gemini has added a Google toggle labeled “double-check response,” allowing them to quickly cross-verify the accuracy of the content produced by Gemini AI. The chatbot offers this feature on both its web and mobile applications.
The company stated, “The double-check responses feature helps you assess the credibility of Gemini’s statements using Google Search to find content that’s likely similar or different.”
What does this verification process look like? Google has implemented a color-coded system; the content is highlighted in either orange or green and remains unhighlighted in some scenarios as well.
Green Highlight: Provides a link to content that Google Search has discovered is identical to the AI-generated data.
Orange Highlight: This shows that Google was unable to locate any relevant content online.
No Highlight: This indicates that little data could be found online to assess the AI-generated content.
This feature comes soon after Google launched AI Overviews, a feature that displays AI-generated summaries and answers to users’ queries. AI overviews garnered a lot of attention online for coming to hilariously wrong conclusions while compiling data from search results.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai considers the verification feature an important addition and a major step toward improving the dependability and credibility of AI-generated content. Google’s initiative to verify AI-generated content is the company’s way of reassuring its users that results produced by Gemini are authentic and can be trusted.
