Google is enhancing its spreadsheet features with the new Gemini upgrade for Google Sheets. This update brings a variety of AI-driven enhancements aimed at improving data analysis, visualization, and interpretation.
“Building data visualizations and identifying trends in data is a critical business function, however it can be time consuming and oftentimes overwhelming. To improve upon this experience, we’re making it easier for Sheets users, ranging from small business owners to marketing analysts, to visualize and analyze data using Gemini in Sheets,” reads Google’s Workspace Updates blog
Previously, the Gemini side panel in Sheets could summarize spreadsheets and create tables by converting prompts into formulas. However, the limitations of formulas meant that users could only perform a single layer of analysis on their data.
Now, Gemini is introducing more sophisticated data analysis and visualization tools. The AI assistant can convert user requests into Python code and execute it, allowing for multi-layered analysis of the results.
Google has stated that Gemini will be capable of answering questions about the data and offering deeper insights into the spreadsheet. Users can inquire about trends, patterns, and correlations among different data variables. Furthermore, Gemini can generate charts to help users visualize the information, which can be inserted as static images over cells in the spreadsheet.
To access these new features, simply click the ‘star’ icon at the top right of your page. These enhancements will be available to Google Workspace Business Standard and Plus subscribers, Enterprise Standard and Plus subscribers, as well as users with the Gemini Education or Gemini Education Premium add-on. Google One AI Premium subscribers will also have access to these features.
The report highlights use cases primarily for business professionals, such as marketing managers analyzing campaign performance or business owners managing cash flows. However, these tools will be beneficial for anyone who frequently works with data in Google Sheets.
The rollout of this release began on January 29th, with an anticipated completion date of February 20th.
