Google Hangouts’ days are number, as the company plans to shut it down in November. The tech giant has announced that it is initiating the process of migrating free, personal Hangouts users to Chat, which it announced in October 2020. Google also mentioned that the users who want to keep a copy of their Hangouts data should use Google Takeout and download their data before Hangouts is no longer available in November 2022.
Google had originally said in 2020 that the users will be transitioned from Hangouts to Chat, and after a couple more phases of transition, the company revealed that Hangouts will be discontinued in November. The company says “Google Chat opens up new and better ways to connect and work,” as they had been concentrating on enhancing and user-friendly the platform.
According to Google, users using Hangouts on mobile devices will be encouraged to switch to Chat through their Gmail account or download the Chat app. The same holds true for users of Hangouts on the web, who will have until July to migrate to Chat. Before Hangouts on the web starts to divert users to Chat on the web, users will first get an in-product notification.
Most customers of Hangouts will get a transfer of their chats to Google Chat. On May 15, 2013, Google Hangouts was introduced, allowing users to exchange messages, record voice notes, and even conduct video calls. Since March 22, Google has been making Chat the default messaging app for all users by turning on the “Chat preferred” setting.
