Google is developing a new AI Mode for its Search platform, which aims to offer users a conversational interface for more sophisticated search inquiries.
According to a report from The Information, the company plans to include an option to activate AI Mode at the top of the results page, providing access to an interface akin to its Gemini AI chatbot. The report indicates that the AI Mode interface closely resembles the web version of the Gemini chatbot, suggesting that Google intends to broaden the reach of its Gemini chatbot with this move.
The AI Mode will be located just below the text field, next to the “All,” “Images,” and “Videos” tabs. When users click on AI Mode, they’ll be directed to a new interface similar to Gemini’s web client. After entering a search query, users can expect to see contextual information, relevant links, related pages, and even the option to ask follow-up questions. Google believes this will enhance the search experience.
Google Search mainly uses text commands, but the new AI mode is said to allow for both text and voice prompts, giving users the option to enjoy a hands-free experience. As of now, it’s unclear when Google plans to roll out this new AI feature.
Lately, Google has found itself lagging behind in the AI race compared to the impressive strides made by OpenAI. The AI startup has successfully drawn in numerous users with its innovative features, prompting Google to hasten its efforts to keep pace with these advancements.
Now, with OpenAI launching search capabilities in ChatGPT for all users, Google is likely feeling the heat to integrate search and AI more effectively. The company has already started showing AI search summaries for certain queries and recently expanded this feature to more countries in October.
