Google unveiled a new “Perspectives” filter that will appear at the top of certain of its Search results when the results “would benefit from others’ experiences,” such as posts on discussion boards, Q&A sites, and social networking platforms featuring video.
That means you’ll be able to find things like Reddit links and YouTube or TikTok videos in search results without having to add the platform’s name to your search query.
The company earlier stated that a Perspectives section would be available beneath Top Stories in the United States in English on desktop and mobile. It will now be available to utilize in general search results, if applicable.
Furthermore, Google claims that when users use the Perspectives filter, they will see more information about the content creators, such as their name, profile picture, and information about the popularity of their material.
These personal tales, discussions, and creator content will also be available through a dedicated “Perspectives” section on some search results pages. There will be a “see more” option provided here, which will take users to a full page of content that matches their findings from various user-generated sources.
In relation to this, Google says it’s working on an improved system for understanding and ranking personal content, which will be written from an expert’s perspective — an acknowledgement, sort of, that Google’s original system for ranking webpages is losing relevance in an era when so much information is being published by individuals on social platforms and other places other than the traditional website.
The company also claims to be improving how it ranks “review content” on Search by giving more weight to higher-quality sites with unique content. That could become increasingly important in the age of AI, where potentially too much stuff will be AI-created rather than original — and a search engine that recognizes the difference could be very beneficial.
