India-born Parag Agrawal took over as the new CEO of Twitter following co-founder Jack Dorsey’s step down from the helm of the San Francisco-based microblogging network after 16 years.

Prior to his sudden promotion, Agrawal, an IIT-Bombay and Stanford University alumnus, was Twitter’s chief technology officer. In early trading, Twitter shares rose by as much as 10% in response to the news. Vijaya Gadde, Twitter’s policy, and safety lead director will suddenly be the company’s other most influential and powerful employee besides Agrawal.

Agrawal will join the ranks of numerous other Indian-born CEOs, like IBM’s Arvind Krishna, Google’s Sundar Pichai, and Microsoft’s Satya Nadella, in leading significant US technology corporations with a worldwide presence.

Dorsey stated that the Twitter board of directors performed a detailed search for a replacement and “unanimously” picked Agrawal, who will also be appointed to the Twitter board. Dorsey tweeted on his handle as a statement to Twitter personnel that Agrawal has “been behind every critical decision that helped turn this company around”.

Agrawal, a Stanford University Ph.D. in computer science, began his career with Microsoft Research before moving on to Yahoo and AT&T Labs R&D departments before joining Twitter as a software developer in October 2011. He tweeted about being thankful for the opportunity to Jack and the entire Twitter team via his handle and how excited he was to build the future of the company.

Prior to his appointment as CTO, Parag rose to become Twitter’s first distinguished engineer for his work in revenue and consumer engineering, particularly for his role in the re-acceleration of audience growth in 2016 and 2017, according to a statement by the company.
