Apple is all set to introduce on-device AI features. This move comes right before iOS 18’s debut at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June.
According to Mark Gurman (Bloomberg), the upcoming iPhone will have AI capabilities that are fully powered by a Large Language Model (LLM). Apple will be the one developing it, and the device itself will handle all AI processing. According to Mark, This innovation is a part of Apple’s exploration into more lucrative endeavors like augmented reality glasses and personal robots.
Apple is currently competing with companies such as OpenAI and Google when it comes to AI. It’s being speculated that Apple’s on-device AI will not be as potent as the AI processing offered by dedicated cloud servers, despite the fact that it will offer privacy and speed advantages. It’s still unclear, though, if Apple plans to release AI features that complement the on-device AI processing.
Apple wants to sell these developments by emphasizing how useful they are in day-to-day life, as opposed to focusing on the power of AI tools. It is anticipated that the company will disclose all specifics of its AI strategy in June at the WWDC.
Using a simple toggle, users will have the freedom to decide whether to process AI data locally on the device. Devices such as the Galaxy S24 and previous models with One UI 6.1 with AI capabilities have been spotted employing this method. The performance of AI features will vary; some will execute quickly, while others may respond more slowly. This will depend on the complexity and workload of the feature.
Though Apple has remained tight-lipped regarding the specifics of the upcoming AI features, there have been rumors and hopes for improvements in areas such as advanced image editing features, more dependable autocorrect functionality, and language translation. There were also reports that Apple is in talks with Google to let Gemini AI power certain AI features on iOS 18. This too is unconfirmed as of yet.
