In an effort to fill outstanding openings, Meta ceased requiring job applicants to have a four-year university or college degree to apply for some posts last year. At the time, the company stated that it hoped the move would persuade employers that a postsecondary degree isn’t the only option to obtain the skills required to be a useful addition to their team. Following that announcement, the company collaborated with Coursera, an online learning platform, to produce five new software engineering professional certificates.

According to Meta, the programs are suitable for people wishing to get the required skills for entry-level employment in technology. Enrollment in the courses does not need previous industry experience or a college degree. The new courses cover everything from front-end programming to Android and iOS app development, with the latter providing a crash course on JavaScript, React, Swift, and UIKit. Two of the programs begin on June 30th, with the remaining three launching on July 31st — but you may pre-register for all of them beginning today. The courses are being offered at a time when software businesses like Meta are having difficulty filling positions in the United States. Even before the epidemic, approximately one million IT jobs were vacant in the United States. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the shortfall will worsen in the coming years. It’s difficult to determine how many extra professional certifications will help resolve the problem, but Meta is certainly doing everything it can to address its own talent crisis.
