Meta-owned social media platform, Threads, is introducing a new feature that allows users to add location information to their posts. While some users have already begun seeing the update in their app, the feature has not yet been rolled out to everyone. This gradual release suggests that the location-sharing capability is still in the process of being made available to all users.
When the feature goes live, users will notice a pin icon in the post composer that allows them to add location details. Importantly, adding a location to a Threads post doesn’t reveal an exact pin on a map. Instead, it provides a general idea of the location, such as the city, street, or a nearby restaurant. Tapping on a Threads post with a location tag will display posts shared by others from the same place. This feature resembles the location tagging feature found on Instagram, another social media platform by Meta.
When you allow Threads to access your location, it provides a list of nearby places you can tag, or you can manually search for and add a location to your post. An in-app disclaimer reveals that Meta has implemented this functionality to improve Threads by delivering personalized content about nearby locations. This feature could enhance the app’s utility by allowing users to discover breaking news and other timely events in their vicinity. Meta has also highlighted that users can adjust this feature at any time through their device settings. However, even if the location feature is disabled, Threads will still utilize users’ IP addresses to approximate their general location.
Currently, the location tagging feature on Threads appears to be available exclusively on the mobile app, with no access to the web version. However, it is anticipated that this feature will be introduced on the web soon.
