Sega Sammy Holdings Inc, a Japanese holding company involved in the amusement industry, has announced a cloud gaming alliance with Microsoft. It has revealed plans to use the tech giant’s Azure cloud platform to power its ‘Super Game’.
Sega announced this in a press release stating that they “have agreed in principle, a strategic alliance that explores ways for SEGA to produce large-scale, global games in a next-generation development environment built on Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform. The alliance would form a key part of SEGA’s mid to long-term strategy, allowing the business to move forward with “Super Game”, a new initiative for developing new and innovative titles where the key focuses are “Global”, “Online”, “Community” and “IP utilization”. The announcement hints at a probable possibility of a deeper tie-up in the future.
Earlier in May, Sega pronounced its plan to develop some kind of ‘super game’ in the next 5 years. This statement seems to be materializing with the latest announcement of its ‘strategic alliance’ with Microsoft. It is to be noticed that Sega has not disclosed any useful information about its super game initiative apart from the catchwords (“Global”, “Online”, “Community” and “IP utilization” ) that keep the readers guessing about.
To quote Yukio Sugino, President and COO, SEGA Corporation, “By considering a strategic partnership with Microsoft, we seek to further advance our game development so that our titles can be enjoyed by fans all over the world; in this regard, we aim to build an alliance that utilizes both SEGA’s powerful game development capabilities and Microsoft’s cutting-edge technology and development environment.”
In 2019, a similar alliance was formed between Microsoft and Sony to enhance their cloud gaming, AI solutions.
Sega Sammy Holdings Inc. is a Japanese holding company formed from the merger of Sega and Sammy Corporation in 2004. Both companies function as an integrated entertainment company. Sega is behind the renowned Sonic the Hedgehog series.
