Microsoft has announced that developers can now access a preview version of its Microsoft Dev Box cloud-powered workstations. As this managed service is now publicly available, developers can create on-demand, pumped-up, reliable, ready-to-code, project-explicit workstations in the cloud.

What is Microsoft Dev Box?

The first announcement about the Microsoft Dev Box came earlier this year at the Microsoft Build Conference 2022. It was conceived as “a managed service that enables developers to create “on-demand, high-performance, secure, ready-to-code, project-specific workstations in the cloud,” the company said.

It is undoubtedly an effortless way for developers to roll out potent cloud PCs for testing applications. It comprises developer-specific apps and services to quickly access preconfigured workstations. They just need to simply sign in to the Azure portal and search for “dev box”. Creating dev boxes for your organization is as simple as this.

Microsoft Dev Box helps developers to focus on writing the code only they can write without any botheration of getting a working environment that can build and run the code. Dev boxes come as a ready-to-code service with all the tools and settings needed for the projects and tasks. It helps developers to create custom-made dev boxes every time they need to switch between projects, try out a proof-of-concept, or start a full build even as they set off to the next task.

As the Microsoft Dev Box supports any developer IDE, SDK, or tool that runs on Windows, developers can attempt any development workload that can be made from Windows including desktop, mobile, IoT, and web applications. They can even build cross-platform apps on account of Windows Subsystem for Linux and Windows Subsystem for Android.

Developers can enjoy the flexibility to securely access dev boxes from any device as there is remote access. There is also a portal for developers to organize dev boxes, a perfect setup for handling legacy apps or older versions of apps for some customers. Moreover, security is an intrinsic feature of the product making management of sensitive source code more accessible.

Undoubtedly, the Microsoft Dev Box transforms developers’ workstations by helping them try cloud-powered workstations. It allows IT admins to provide users with preconfigured virtual PCs.
