Microsoft enticed developers to utilize a cloud-powered developer workstation with Windows 365 last year. Microsoft Dev Box is a new cloud service that offers apps and services for developers to get a preconfigured development workstation rapidly.
Since Microsoft Dev Box is built on the foundations of Windows 365, it’s simple to create a new virtual machine and get started. That means Microsoft Dev Box will run on any modern browser, and the computers will support any IDE, SDK, or tools that run on top of Windows.
Microsoft is targeting this at a broad range of developers who may be working on projects with software conflicts and dependencies that make maintaining a developer workstation more difficult. Dev Boxes are well-suited for desktop, mobile, IoT, and gaming developers, according to the company, and cross-platform apps may be produced utilizing the Windows Subsystem for Linux.
“With Microsoft Dev Box, dev teams create and maintain Dev Box images with all the tools and dependencies their devs need to build and run their applications,” explains Anthony Cangialosi, Microsoft’s principal group PM. “Teams can include their application source code and nightly built binaries, enabling devs to immediately start running and understanding the code without having to wait for long re-builds.”
Microsoft has created a portal that allows developers to build, delete, and parallelize Dev Boxes across several PCs. Developers can then use Dev Boxes to simulate a customer environment for legacy apps or previous versions of their software. Dev Boxes can be installed in local Azure regions across the world, with gigabit connectivity and the flexibility to employ start and stop schedules to hibernate machines when developers log off for the day.IT administrators can manage Dev Boxes with Intune and Microsoft Endpoint Manager because Microsoft Dev Box is integrated into Windows 365. Microsoft Dev Box launches in private preview mode today, with a public preview coming “in the next few months.” Microsoft is now taking Microsoft Dev Box signups on its developer portal.
