OpenAI is making its most popular AI image generation tool free! It’s the DALL-E 3 model that will be available to ChatGPT users without a subscription. The announcement comes from OpenAI’s official X (formerly Twitter) account.
Up until recently, DALL-E 3 could only be accessed by paying customers who subscribe to ChatGPT. For $20 a month, users can generate up to 50 images in a day.
With a suite of advanced features like photorealistic image generation capabilities, precise text and even the ability to inpaint – that is, replace missing areas of an image with generated content that is tailored to fit the rest of the image – DALL-E 3 is one of the most powerful AI image generators.
So what’s the catch? For users on the free tier, the company has placed a daily limit of two images, as opposed to the 50-image limit for paying users. However, the quality or complexity of the images that can be generated remains the same. It should also be noted that free users cannot access the image editing feature.
Users can generate images on both the Android and iOS apps and the AI chatbot’s web interface
Users on the web interface have two options: they can generate directly with ChatGPT or navigate to the side panel on the ChatGPT website to access the Dall-E interface. To achieve the desired result, the Dall-E 3 interface will require you to write an elaborate prompt that includes information about the angle, lighting, camera, prompt adherence, and more.
Expanding access to DALL-E 3 looks to be OpenAI’s attempt at encouraging people to play around with the company’s more complex AI projects. However, many have expressed doubts about how worthwhile this update will be because of the two images per day rule, considering that AI image generation is a largely iterative process.
