OpenAI has announced that it has disabled the ‘ Browse with Bing‘ feature from the ChatGPT app as it has discovered instances where the app did not perform according to the expectations of the company. This browse feature has been removed from the app since July 3, 2023, but the date of restoration of the feature is yet to be announced. The company is planning to bring the beta feature back as quickly as possible. In order to make users subscribe to the website, some websites use paywalls to stop users from accessing the websites for free. It was noticed that the browse option in ChatGPT allows users to access information that was available only for paid users. The browse feature was available as part of ChatGPT Plus at a subscription of $20 a month.
Content owners’ privacy is the main issue that prevails. If a user asks for a URL’s full text, the app will provide the user with information. Many companies have warned ChatGPT against using users’ sensitive data. OpenAI explained that Browse with Bing feature is very useful as the Plus users can get comprehensive answers and current insights on events and information which is beyond ChatGPT’s original training data. As the feature is disabled the knowledge of ChatGPT ends in 2021. For example, if we ask ChatGPT questions like, Who won the 2022 FIFA World Cup tournament? The app would not give a correct response.
Open AI is behind this feature and they are trying hard to mitigate the risk of exposing or compromising user data. This reflects how much the company is concerned about the data protection and data privacy of the users. OpenAI is seen to place its focus more on user feedback for bringing out new features and also to set its future plans for resolving the cybersecurity and AI safety issues that they face now.
