With SearchGPT, OpenAI marks its highly anticipated foray into the search industry. The ChatGPT startup said that it is in the testing phase for the SearchGPT prototype, which is “designed to combine the strength of our AI models with information from the web” in order to provide relevant resources and promptly respond to online queries.

SearchGPT comes at a time when many companies are scrambling to offer AI-powered search to users. Even Google, the company that holds the monopoly over the search market, has introduced AI features into the platform.

One notable difference in how OpenAI has approached the subject is that it has opted for a collaborative approach. “SearchGPT is designed to help users connect with publishers by prominently citing and linking to them in searches,” reads the company’s blog post. “Responses have clear, in-line, named attribution and links so users know where information is coming from and can quickly engage with even more results in a sidebar with source links.”

The blog goes on to highlight that the prototype was created in collaboration with multiple news outlets and has statements from the CEOs of News Corp and The Atlantic, two of the many outlets with which OpenAI has licensing agreements.

Additionally, OpenAI mentioned that publishers will be able to manage how their content appears in SearchGPT and that they can choose not to have their content utilized for training OpenAI’s models and still have it show up in search results.

As soon as you open SearchGPT, you will be greeted with a textbox that reads  “What are you looking for?”.  SearchGPT categorizes the results with short descriptions and images, as opposed to traditional search engines like Google, which usually provide a list of links.

It is being reported that the software will first be tested by 10,000 people and that the company intends to roll it out into ChatGPT after obtaining feedback.
