If OpenAI decides to develop its own chips, ChatGPT might be powered by them in the future. According to a reliable source, the corporation is presently investigating the idea of developing its own artificial intelligence chips and has even considered acquiring another company. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman previously blamed GPU shortages for customers’ complaints about the firm API’s speed and reliability, so he allegedly prioritized the acquisition of more AI processors.
In addition to addressing GPU shortages, OpenAI employing its own processors may reduce the expenses involved with running its products. According to Stacy Rasgon of Bernstein Research, each ChatGPT question costs the corporation about 4 cents. In its first two months, the service had 100 million monthly users, which amounts to millions of searches every day, albeit it did lose users for the first time in July. Rasgon stated that if ChatGPT inquiries reach a tenth of what Google receives, it will require $48.1 billion in GPUs initially and $16 billion in processors continuing forward.
NVIDIA now owns the market for processors designed for AI applications; the Microsoft supercomputer OpenAI, for example, employs 10,000 NVIDIA GPUs. That is why other organizations, including larger players in the technology industry, have opted to begin creating their own. Another source, said Microsoft, OpenAI’s largest investor, has been developing its own AI processor since 2019. The device is known as Athena, and OpenAI has apparently been evaluating it.
The main source says, OpenAI has yet to determine whether to proceed with its ambitions. Even if it decides to proceed, it might be years before it can begin utilizing its own processors to power its goods.
